2024-03-27 - Important Updates on Mjolnir Maintenance and System Changes Effective 12 April 2024

Dear Mjolnir user and PI's.

Following are two changes which will affect how you work on Mjolnir from 12 April 2024.

12 April 2024 in the timeframe ~9.00-14.00, all servers will be reserved meaning that jobs scheduled exceeding EndDate 12 April 9.00 will be queued until maintenance have finished.
Please take this into consideration when scheduling your jobs the coming two weeks.

During the maintenance downtime the following will happen:

All users will permanently loose access to mjolnirhead01fl, as part of a new gatesystem.
This means that you will no longer be able to ssh to mjolnirhead01fl.unicph.domain, which you have done for the past two years.
See below for how to login after 12 April.

GateServer implementation
When we purchased the initial servers, we under-dimensioned the server mjolnirhead01fl, it has too little memory (125gb).
This has given a few hiccups, but not too many, during the past 2 years, but this will change from Friday 12 April.

A new gateserver has been installed, and a select few users has been testing it for the past weeks. This server has 1TB memory and will serve as the new gateway to access Mjolnir.
The rules of ’no compute’ will still apply to the new server and I will be specifying at our website, www.mjolnir-ucph.dk, which processes can be run.

From 12 April ~14.00 the only way you can access Mjolnir is to use the new gateway, which is done in the following way:

ssh KUID@mjolnirgate.unicph.domain (replace KUID with your own KUID)

mjolnirgate is a DNS which primarily will redirect you to the new mjolnirgate01fl server, but in case this server is down you, will be redirected to a Virtual Server instead (future implementation).
This means that despite the server being upgraded, rebooted, etc, you will still be able to access Mjolnir and work as normally and give increased overall stability.

From mjolnirgate, no matter if it is a physical or a virtual server, you will still be able to access your data and submit jobs to Slurm.
You can already now use the new mjolnirgate.unicph.domain, and I recommend you all to logout from mjolnirhead01fl and instead login using mjolnirgate.unicph.domain

Moving of Slurm accounting database
During the downtime, the slurm accounting database processing will be moved back to the physical mjolnirhead01fl server, currently it is running in a virtual server.
This move will not affect you in any way, except for the inconvenience of not being able to run any jobs while the slurm configurations are being changed (Friday 12th 9-14)

/datasets/globe_databases will replace /datasets/mjolnir_databases
A few months ago we moved all databases from /projects/mjolnir1/data/databases to /datasets/mjolnir_databases in order to provide more structure and reduce storage.
Unfortunately the databases will be moved one final time.

At the new location /datasets/globe_databases it will from 12 April be possible for non-Mjolnir users from Globe to also read all the database, hence increasing cross departmental sharing and decreasing storage cost.

Currently no-one is able to access /datasets/globe_databases as I am awaiting IDM-team to modify the access roles but it is expected that they will have it changed before 12 April.
I am only announcing it to you now so you are aware of the coming change. I will keep you updated on the process.

On 12 April I will also finally remove /projects/mjolnir1/data/databases, so if you have any data in this directory you want to have moved, then please create a support ticket at https://mjolnir-ucph.dk

Best regards,
Bent
