New Globe-wide Database Repository Now Accessible to Globe KU-Research-IT-hosted compute systems

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the establishment of a new Globe-wide database repository, which has evolved from the Mjolnir project.
Initially, these databases were organized exclusively for Mjolnir users.
However, I have now restructured them to be available to all Globe associated users of KU-IT-hosted compute systems.

The databases are centralized in a shared folder accessible to all Globe users, which will help reduce storage costs and eliminate duplicate copies across Globe.
This repository is now available to all Globe-affiliated users across KU-Research-IT-hosted compute systems, not just Mjolnir users.

The databases can be found at /datasets/globe_databases and will be accessible in read-only mode to ensure proper organization and to prevent disorder.

A comprehensive list of all currently established databases is available online at https://mjolnir-ucph.dk/databases.html
All databases will have subfolders with the date they were downloaded and, if relevant, the version of the database to ensure reproducibility.

I have differentiated between databases (such as NCBI, Refseq, Kraken, Kaiju, MMseqs, Swissprot, etc.) and datasets (such as sequencing data, favorite protein sets etc).
If there is a need for an organised and shared dataset storage, then I am open to discussing that as well.

New databases can be requested through the form available at https://mjolnir-ucph.dk/databases.html

Access is managed through IDM roles. All Mjolnir users already have access, while non-Mjolnir users can apply for access at https://mjolnir-ucph.dk/databases.html

I will verify users' affiliations, as Anders has generously agreed to cover the storage fees for the common databases across Globe.
It is, therefore, important to ensure that only Globe affiliated users benefit from this arrangement, so we are not incurring costs for other departments.

Database owners from other compute systems, please create a ticket at https://mjolnir-ucph.dk if you want to have your databases transferred to the common storage.
Another piece of great news - through the Globe-Educational-Board, we now have a teaching server available for all courses running across Globe requiring computation. There are still some obstacles in inviting external users, but I will provide more information and procedures once this issue has been resolved.
In the meantime, if you are running a course for already Globe-associated people (meaning that guest contracts are signed for externals) and require a server for computation, including more than 1050 software modules already installed (https://mjolnir-ucph.dk/software.html), please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Please let me know if you have any comments or questions.

I wish you all a great summer!

Best regards,

Bent
